By protecting Greek borders, Greeks are protecting EU borders

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin met Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarachi, on Monday in Athens for an exchange of views on the management of the migration issue in Europe, before the accession of France to the presidency of the EU for the first half of 2022.

A ministry statement said Mitarachi and Darmanin agreed “on critical areas, such as border protection, as the two countries face common challenges – Greece as a frontline country and France. as country of destination “.

Mitarachi pointed out that the delay in negotiating a new migration and asylum policy “probably cannot lead to the European Commission being totally inactive in dealing with the migration issue”, as it exists at at least three issues for which immediate action can be taken within the existing legislative framework: border protection, external relations and returns.

Darmanin, who visited the closed and controlled migration center on the island of Samos on Sunday, said the Greek authorities were “fully effective” in combating illegal migration and were protecting all of Europe by protecting their own borders .

The French EU Presidency will take up the Greek example in the protection of external borders, in order to guarantee the free movement of people within the EU. The French presidency, he said, must provide “very specific proposals for European countries to keep external borders”, in solidarity with Mediterranean countries.
