French mountaineer Warren Barguil has been expelled from the Tour de France after testing positive for COVID-19.

Barguil’s Arkea-Samsic team said in a statement ahead of Friday’s 13th stage that its seven teammates had all tested negative.

It is the second year in a row that Barguil, who injured his right hip and shoulder in a crash on Thursday, has dropped out of the three-week race. He was 24th overall, nearly 43 minutes behind leader Jonas Vingaard.

Barguil rose to prominence on the 2017 Tour when he won two stages and claimed the King of the Mountains’ polka dot jersey.

Stage 13 takes the Tour peloton from Bourg d’Oisans to Saint-Etienne. Vingaard, the leader of Jumbo-Visma, defends a lead of 2 minutes and 22 seconds over defending champion Tadej Pogacar of the UAE-Emirates team.
