A 5.6 magnitude earthquake near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, Japan was reported just 12 minutes ago by the Japan National Research Institute for Earth Sciences and Disaster Resilience ( NIED), considered to be the main national agency monitoring seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 54.3 km below the epicenter on the morning of Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 11:24 a.m. local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the National Seismic Surveillance Network (RéNaSS) of France which also listed the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.6. Other agencies reporting the same earthquake include the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) at magnitude 5.4 and the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.4.
Typically, earthquakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and results may vary, with subsequent reports that come after the first often showing more accuracy.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It should not have caused any significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken glass, etc.
In Namie (21,900 inhabitants) located 63 km from the epicenter, the earthquake should have been felt as slight tremors.
Weak tremors could have been felt in Watari (pop. 36,300) located 90 km from the epicenter, Marumori (16,800 inhabitants) 90 km, Kakuda (pop. 33,200) 93 km, Iwaki (pop. 357 300) 94 km, Iwanuma (42,400 inhabitants) 94 km, Ishinomaki (117,200 inhabitants) 99 km and ÅŒkawara (23,300 inhabitants) 100 km.
