French President Emmanuel Macron was greeted with tomatoes in his first public appearance since being re-elected on Sunday. Mr Macron was waving to the French after his convincing victory in the presidential election when a member of the crowd threw tomatoes at him. Tomatoes, however, missed the president.

A video on Twitter showed Mr Macron, surrounded by his security, accepting greetings from his supporters when tomatoes were thrown at him. The tomatoes missed the French president and instead hit one of his security guards, who shouted “projectile”.

Security officials immediately covered Mr. Macron from all directions, then one of them deployed a special umbrella to protect him from above. The incident sparked a brief commotion as security officials appeared to convince Mr Macron to move to a safer location.

In the footage, Mr Macron can be seen leaving the scene after the incident.

Mr Macron beat his rival and far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the election. In his second term, the 44-year-old president will face a number of hurdles, starting with parliamentary elections in June, where maintaining a majority would be key to achieving his reform goals.

His first term was marked by street protests in France against pro-business reforms. Many expect the protests to start again in the second term. Already, a mostly young crowd had gathered in central Paris after Mr Macron was re-elected. The police had to spray tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
